Acrostic Generator

Generate an acrostic poem from any word. Written so that the spelling is checked down the left edge before you see it.

Everything it writes is original. It will not reproduce an existing poem.

How an acrostic works

The first letter of each line spells a word reading downward. Give it a name, a month, a place or anything else, and each line begins with the next letter in turn.

This generator checks the result before showing it. A poem whose first letters do not spell what you asked for is rewritten, because that is the one thing the form has to get right and it is what most tools skip.

What separates a poem from a list

Most acrostic generators produce a compliment per line, each starting with the right letter, and stop there. Kind. Amazing. Talented. That is an initialism with adjectives, not a poem, and it reads exactly like one.

The fix is to let sentences run across lines. When a thought carries from one line into the next, the mechanism disappears and the poem reads as writing that happens to start each line in a particular place. That is what this one is prompted to do.

Hard letters are where the craft shows

X, Q, Z and sometimes J are where acrostics fall apart, and the usual escape is to invent a spelling. Xtraordinary. Qute. That is a surrender and it is visible.

The better move is to restructure so a real word lands on the awkward letter, even a plain one. A line beginning with Quiet or Just is worth more than an invented spelling of something more impressive.

Keep the lines a similar length as well, so the left edge stays readable as a word rather than a ragged column.

Questions

What word can I use?

Any word or name. Longer words give more lines, and anything past about twelve letters starts to strain unless the subject is broad.

Does it check the spelling?

Yes. The first letters are read down and compared against your word before the poem is shown. If they do not match, it writes another.

Is it free?

Yes. Most requests are answered from a library written in advance, so serving a page costs nothing to run.

Can I use a name?

That is the most common use. Give it the name and a line about the person, and it will write toward that rather than producing generic compliments.
