Chorus Generator

Generate an original chorus in seconds. Written so that written to be singable after one listen rather than clever on the page.

Emotional arc up to 3, in order

Everything it writes is original. It will not reproduce the words of an existing song.

What a chorus has to do

It has to be the part somebody can sing back having heard it once. That single requirement decides almost everything else: a small vocabulary, deliberate repetition, and lines shorter than anything in the verses.

A chorus made of four different clever lines usually will not survive one listen. A chorus that repeats one phrase four times often will. Repetition here is a tool rather than a failure of imagination.

Why open vowels matter

Long open vowels hold a note. Clustered consonants stop it. That is why so many choruses land on ay, oh, eye or oo, and it is worth choosing for rather than discovering by accident when you try to sing what you wrote.

The other rule is contrast. Verses carry the detail, the chorus strips it out. A chorus full of proper nouns rarely travels, because the listener cannot put themselves inside it.

How do they even take to sheets I washed How do they relax in furniture I bought on loans? Now every wall’s a stranger’s story I sold my keys and bought this ghost The garden hose still kinks my wrist They water plants that aren’t my wistful mist A For Sale sign leans like the prayers I dropped Nailed to the ground I can’t touch How do they even take to sheets I washed How do they relax in furniture I bought on loans? Now every wall’s a stranger’s story I sold my keys and bought this ghost How do they even take to sheets I washed How do they relax in furniture I bought on loans? Now every wall’s a stranger’s story I sold my keys and bought this ghost

I was just a stranger in your vows I was just a stranger in your vows

Oh, the hour is slipping away, and I'm running out of time To make a change, to rewrite the lines

Oh the lining remembers what the heart forgets, It won’t let me close the door without looking back. Oh the lining remembers what the heart forgets, It won’t let me close the door without looking back.

I dial the ghosts in your old area code, Listen for the click like a heartbeat, But all I get back is the radio, Blasting through the bad cell signal. I’m six weeks too long, six weeks too tired, six weeks of counting the minutes like wires. The paycheck’s fat but the nights are lean, six weeks too long in between. I’m six weeks too long, six weeks too tired, six weeks of measuring time like ladders. The paycheck’s fat but the nights are lean, six weeks and I’m counting the between.

October drive feels like we outran yesterday October drive, but the miles keep us in the same damn place October drive feels like we outran yesterday October drive, but the miles keep us in the same damn place

The clock in her paws ticks slower than my voice, Every step she takes is a decision, every choice. I can’t rewind the vet’s stethoscope, But I’d trade every road for another inch of road. You carried me when I was tall Now I carry you where the maple falls Slow down, slow down, the light won't last I'm sorry, boy, I was too damn fast You carried me when I was tall Now I carry you where the maple falls Slow down, slow down, the light won't last I'm sorry, boy, I was too damn fast You carried me when I was tall Now I carry you where the maple falls Slow down, slow down, the light won't last I should've known you couldn't keep up that fast

Oh, I'm driving through the night, with the music loud and free Trying to outrun the shadows, that are chasing me I'm running out of time, and I'm running out of me Fading out, like the embers of a dying sea Oh, I'm driving through the night, with the music loud and free Trying to outrun the shadows, that are chasing me I'm running out of time, and I'm running out of me Fading out, like the embers of a dying sea

I burnt the onions clean off the pan Left the salt in the cabinet Still tasted like home somehow I burnt the onions clean off the pan Left the salt in the cabinet Still tasted like home somehow I burnt the onions clean off the pan Left the salt in the cabinet Still tasted like home somehow

I’ll carry the weight of a half an apology, half an excuse for the way it sounded to you. I could swear that I hear it echoing, but the walls just fold it back like they always do. I’ll carry the weight of a half an apology, half an excuse for the way it sounded to you. I could swear that I hear it echoing, but the walls just fold it back like they always do. I’ll carry the weight of a half an apology, half an excuse for the way it sounded to you. I’ll swallow the echo, I’ll swallow the room, let the floorboards forget what the ceiling knew.

But the room gets clearer when you’re gone Every shadow owns its shape now I’m just the echo left to haunt the corners Waiting for the chairs to stack back up But the room gets clearer when you’re gone Every shadow owns its shape now I’m just the echo left to haunt the corners Waiting for the chairs to stack back up So the room stays bright when you’re gone Every shadow owns its neutral ground I’m just the echo left to haunt the corners Waiting for the chairs to stack back up again

We made a promise at seventeen, A vow that hung on a single breath. We made a promise at seventeen, A song that still lives in our skin.

Front porch lights are burning steady Every bulb a little yes I can almost feel the weight lift As I walk these last ten steps Front porch lights are burning steady Every bulb a little yes I can almost feel the weight lift As I walk these last ten steps

Oh, the stacks of green, they call to me A siren's song, of freedom and ecstasy I'm chasing the high, the rush of the deal But in the silence, my doubts start to reveal Oh, the stacks of green, they call to me A siren's song, of freedom and ecstasy I'm chasing the high, the rush of the deal But in the silence, my doubts start to reveal

That’s the last train north, that’s the last train home Whole town’s asleep but I’m wide awake alone Ticket burned yellow in my pocket like a warning I watched it leave without me—now the whistle’s no consolation That’s the last train north, that’s the last train home Static crackles like the promise I was never shown Ticket burned yellow in my pocket like the answer I let the brakes release, now the railtown’s in my cancer That’s the last train north, that’s the last train home Railroad hums the tune I used to hum alone Ticket singed black in my fist like a ration Goodbye’s just a whistle now—no destination

I didn’t know then what I know now how every handle pulls two ways at once things we built to launch us lie half-drowned and the only tide that answers is the one that runs I didn’t know then what I know now how every handle pulls two ways at once things we built to launch us lie half-drowned and the only tide that answers is the one that runs I didn’t know then what I know now how every handle pulls two ways at once things we built to launch us lie half-drowned and the only tide that answers is the one that runs

First paycheque looks like freedom till it’s gone Slipped through my hands like the whole thing’s wrong Fingers learn the taste of hot and fast Then learn what’s left when the money’s past First paycheque looks like freedom till it’s gone Slipped through my hands like the whole thing’s wrong Fingers learn the taste of hot and fast Then learn what’s left when the money’s past First paycheque looks like freedom till it’s gone Slipped through my hands like the whole thing’s wrong Fingers learn the taste of hot and fast Then learn what’s left when the money’s past

I hear you in the walls, I hear you in the walls, I hear you in the walls, I hear you in the walls.

I’m sleeping in a house that’s being sold Every wall’s a mouthful of words left untold I light the stove just to see the blue flame crawl But dawn’s already packed my suitcase in the hall I’m sleeping in a house that’s being sold Every wall’s a mouthful of words left untold I light the stove just to see the blue flame crawl But dawn’s already packed my suitcase in the hall I’m sleeping in a house that’s being sold Every wall’s a mouthful of words left untold I light the stove just to see the blue flame crawl And dawn’s already packed my suitcase in the hall

You never gave up, no matter how far I'd roam You were the voice that called me back home

On the line with nothing left to say I’m the ghost in the hold music anyway Static swallows every name I gave I’m just a voice asking for a callback I won’t take On the line with nothing left to say I’m the ghost in the hold music anyway Static swallows every name I gave I’m just a voice asking for a callback I won’t take On the line with nothing left to say I’m the ghost in the hold music anyway Static swallows every name I gave I’m just a voice asking for a callback I won’t take

Oh where the current used to pull me I was restless then I was reckless too Now every curl of the wave brings me Back to the boy who didn’t know what to do Oh where the current used to pull me I was restless then I was reckless too Now every curl of the wave brings me Back to the boy who didn’t know what to do Oh where the current used to pull me I was restless then I was reckless too Now every curl of the wave brings me Back to the boy who didn’t know what to do Back to the boy who didn’t know what to do

Questions

Is this chorus generator free?

Yes. The examples on this page come from a library written in advance and cost nothing to serve.

What is the difference between a chorus and a hook?

In pop the chorus is a section, usually eight bars, with its own melody. A hook is the shortest memorable fragment, which is often inside the chorus but can be anywhere in the song.

Can I get a chorus in another genre?

Yes. Each genre page writes a full song including its chorus, and the conventions differ: a rap hook is simpler and more repetitive than a pop chorus.
